This summer I attended the Chicago stop of the Black Girls RUN! Preserve the Sexy Tour Presented by Dark and Lovely, a one-day workshop for female runners of all levels to increase their knowledge of running. I had heard of the Black Girls RUN! organization, but was not too familiar with them prior to the event.
When BoriquaChicks.com received the invitation, my first thoughts were, ‘Do I have a cute workout outfit?’ and ‘Will I be able to hang with this group of serious runners?’ Before I let any doubts set in, I decided to roll and I’m so glad I did. Running is an activity that I have not done consistently, but I have thought about joining a running group for some time.
Toni Carey and Ashley Hicks founded Black Girls RUN! in 2009, with the mission of encouraging African-American women to make healthy living and fitness a priority. What began as a blog to share the highs and lows of running evolved into a social movement. Since 2011, Black Girls RUN! has launched 70 running groups with 96,000 members around the country. The groups are free and the organization sustains itself through the selling of merchandise and hosting events.
Many of the attendees at the event were a part of several Chicago Black Girls RUN! running groups but everyone was at various levels, from novice to advanced runners. Check out a photo recap of the Chicago tour stop below.
