It’s June and summer will be here in just a few weeks. Because of Chicago’s cold and snowy winters, I absolutely LOVE it when summer rolls around. I can’t wait to have fun. Do you have plans for the summer? There’s so much I want to do, but I have to remember to pace myself and watch my spending habits. In anticipation of summer, I like to begin thinking about what I can buy on a limited budget. In this post are ways that you can save money as you begin to plan your summer of family fun activities.
1) Take a staycation.
It’s easy to live in a city such as Chicago and not enjoy all that it has to offer. Why not search for a weekend rate at a nice family-friendly hotel in your downtown area? Make sure it is next to some local attractions that you could visit—such as the beach, museum, shopping center or a restaurant you may want to try.
…Also, if it’s close to a local dessert shop, that would be extra awesome.
2) Have a picnic in the park.
From guacamole and chips to spinach and strawberry salad, there are certain cold dishes that are extra yummy in the summer. Check online to find out if there are any free summer series in your area, such as movies in the park or free concerts, and then integrate a picnic with family and friends into this outdoor event. Ask everyone who attends to bring a dish or beverage that can be shared and remember to bring utensils and napkins.
…Don’t forget your blanket.
3) Reevaluate your family mobile plan.
My phone is such an important part of my daily routine. From checking email, logging on social media, to connecting with family and friends, I need a phone that complements my lifestyle. As I plan for affordable summer fun, it’s super important that I watch what I spend on my cell phone bill. Moreover, am I getting the right deal? This month I went to my local Walmart store in Chicago to sign up for the Walmart Family Mobile’s 4G LTE service. I bought the ZTE ZMAX phone, which is a no contract device. She’s a beauty. It is a big device with a spacious display, which allows me to easily view messages, take photos, have fun on apps…and essentially work and play.
…I purchased the phone and the required starter kit at the store. I then went online to activate my service. It took less than 15 minutes to complete the process and turn on my new device. I signed up for the $29.88/month (for the first line) package. It offers Unlimited Talk, Text & Data service plan, which includes up to 1G of 4G LTE data. In 1 month I will receive my first bill, as this is a postpaid service. As with any new purchase, hold on to your receipt as you test out the device.
4) Use public transportation.
Summer is a great time to let your car take a break (when distance and weather permits). If you have access to public transportation, consider taking a moment to enjoy being a passenger. If it’s been a while, remember to bring headphones and/or a book. Check your local transportation authority for special weekend or summer fares.
…Not only will you save on parking, but also you and your family will get a little exercise. 😉
5) Go to a matinee.
Don’t let the summer blockbusters break your bank. Do some research and find out what days and times offer discounts at your local theater. Then schedule an affordable family movie date. If your family really enjoys movies, make plans for one of the summer long movie promotions, such as Summer Movie Express, where certain movies on specific days and times are just $1.00. Yes, $1.00.
…Remember not to go to the movies on an empty stomach or you may be inspired to spend too much money at the food counter.
I have shared with you how I plan to save money this summer for my family fun activities! How are you planning to spend less and have fun? Leave a comment and let me know!
