As BoriquaChicks.com mentioned late last year, there would be a new biographical telenovela produced around the life of the iconic Afro-Cuban singer and music trailblazer, Celia Cruz. We promised to follow-up when official details were given. Finally, there is information to share. Yay!
There is excitement in the air because TELEMUNDO announced this summer that the new drama series, Celia, which is inspired by the life of Úrsula Hilaria Celia Caridad Cruz Alfonso, also known to the world as Celia Cruz, will premiere on Tuesday, October 13. Celia will tell the story of the legendary Cuban singer whose unforgettable voice and unique style left a powerful musical legacy. Celia Cruz began her career during the middle of the Cuban revolution and blazed trails during a time when female singers were not the “norm.”
Glenda Pacanins, SVP, Telemundo Programming Strategy Integration, told Billboard:
Most of us, at least those of a certain generation, know a lot about Celia’s later years, but we spend a big portion of the series delving into a side of the young Celia that most people probably aren’t aware of…Yes, she was incredibly talented and driven, but she also didn’t know what she was getting herself into. The Cuban music scene was male-dominated [in the ‘40s and ‘50s], and Celia’s own father was adamantly opposed to her becoming a singer. There was a stigma at that time of women participating in the entertainment industry — they were perceived as easy or as someone who would walk down a bad path in life, so it’s interesting because it sets the stage for the woman that Celia would eventually become. When you see that aspiration, coupled with that incredible talent, you know she’s going to get somewhere.
Celia will feature Puerto Rican actors Jeimy Osorio and Modesto Lacén as Celia Cruz and her husband Pedro Knight during their younger years. Cuban singer Aymeé Nuviola and Cuban actor Willy Denton will play the beautiful Afro-Latino couple in their later years. Below are a few social media snapshots from Nuviola, Lacén, and Osorio.
