This new episode of #BoriquaChicksTV tackles the conversation around Black Latino/a identity—specifically, “Are Puerto Ricans Black?” We received a question on social media from a reader a while back and wanted to provide some insight, as this continues to be a hot topic for our audience.

Loved it! Thank you!
Wow, I remember checking “other” on applications too. I even checked other on my marriage certificate. Thank you for bringing light to an important issue, great post!
SHE IS ISRAELITE .

And Claudette gets ALL THE SIDE EYES WITH HER BLACK SELF.
Of course Puerto Ricans are black!
We have to quit selling that bag of wolf tickets.. All Puerto Ricans aren’t white..ni cubanos.
I.E Andy Garcia and Gloria Estefan.
…hmmmm, one of the concepts I share w/my students is the fact that there are only THREE (3) races on the planet: mongoloid (which includes all Asia/Indian countries /continents, negroid (which normally is used to describe those with VISUAL connections to Africa, including aborigines) and caucasoid (which normally we refer to whites in the US). What most don’t realize that everything else is an ETHNICITY ( Greek, Italian, German, Mexican, Boricua ….)
For example, I’m Afro-Cuban. In America, when people see me, some will ask ‘what are you’ others simply look at the hue of my skin and come to the conclusion that my race is black!!
Unfortunately, MOST of the US populous is ignorant and don’t realize that slavery touched EVERY continent/country in the world—including Russia!!!
So when my half Chinese nieta informs me that I’m brown or my oldest complains that people always pose the ‘what are you’ question to her—my reply is simply HUMAN! 🙂
Just my thoughts.
