Maria Rodriguez-Morales aka bkwrita
Describe the work that you do…
I’m a writer. From poetry to essay to song. I write to reclaim my history, my identity, my culture. I write to take up space in the world. Through my blog I explore the ways in which pop culture intersect with feminism and identity. I also spotlight women of color who are making major moves in their prospective markets, but still somehow fall under the radar.
Why is the work important?
One word. Underrepresentation. In books, in music, in movies, in media. When I stopped asking for inclusion and instead created my own means in which to amplify my own voice, and then used that same platform to amplify the voices of my hermanas, doors began to open. People wanted to hear what I had to say. Don’t be afraid to create your own lane. Your personal legacy depends on it.
Why are you a proud Puerto Rican?
I am a proud Puertorriqueña because of our resiliency. Because we’ve known struggle throughout history and still choose to fight for our people, our land, our culture. Our right to simply exist.
What song is currently in repeat rotation for you?
Cardi B – Bodak Yellow
What book is at the top of your favorite book list?
Untamed State by Roxane Gay
