Every year around this time it seems that we all decide on New Year resolutions that we want to stick with. Whether it’s fitness, career goals, better relationships or living a healthier life, we promise to follow them. This year instead of focusing on multiple categories, I have decided to focus on my friendship goals. There have been a lot of positive things going on with me and it’s been amazing to see who has really been there for me. Whether it was supporting one of my business ventures, volunteering to help me, doing something for free when they didn’t have to do it, or just motivating me, I was glad to have their support. However, it kind of sucked not having the support from people who I thought would be there for me. It seems like it is always those same few people that continuously have my back and for that I’m grateful. What’s interesting is that it is often those people who I don’t talk to everyday that always come around when I need them; there’s no jealousy, no cattiness, just pure friendship. I value these people and because they always have my back I want to have theirs.
So what are my friendship goals for 2016?
What do I PROMISE to do?
I promise to demonstrate my appreciation for our friendship with the following.
Be present for the good times and bad times.
Whether it is a special celebration or one of life’s unfortunate events, I will be there. A text message, a call, or just my presence to acknowledge that I’m there for them is a must. There’s nothing like seeing a face of someone who truly supports you. A social media “like” simply won’t suffice.
Lend a listening ear.
When they want to talk, I will make sure I listen. If they want me to give my thoughts or advice I will, but if that isn’t the case, I’m totally comfortable practicing my listening skills.
Make time in my schedule for them.
While everyone gets “busy” with kids, work, and chasing their dreams, it’s important that we never get too busy to spend time with the people who truly ROCK with us. I plan to make friend time a part of my schedule. There is nothing like getting together with your friends and just kicking back and having fun. Dinner, movie, or going out to a party to spend that quality time together is a must.
